Strategic Route 4 is the newest strategic route in the Sunshine Islands, opening in February 2020. It connects to East Door from the Senpai Bypass and further to Haisey, connecting SI's highways to the new Zone 8 development. The route includes the East Door Tunnel and the Rainsey Bridge, although a future expansion is underway to bring it further east beyond Haisey.

The northern end of Strategic Route 4 is the Horizon Bridge, which connects it directly to Zone 6 while the eastern end of this highway is located at the ramps to/from Haisey Roundabout, just west of the future East Door Port Bridge.

Course[]

For about half of its course in Zone 7, the route follows existing roads such as Senpai Bypass and part of Leafy Road. Near Leafy Hospital, it enters the East Door Tunnel, which runs through the hilly area of Leafy Island and ends at Rainbow, where it turns into the South Bay Highway. The route currently ends across the sea in Haisey, but there are plans to extend it further in the future.

Design[]

When the route was opened, changes were made to the lane configuration of Leafy Road near Leafy Hospital exit to ensure continuity throughout the route. Vehicles heading eastbound on Leafy Road wishing to remain on Leafy Road now have to ascend the slip road previously only used for access to Leafy Hospital Road and Leafy Bay Estate. The arrangement has caused minor traffic congestion at some times, as there is only a short distance between the start of the slip road and a traffic light ahead.

As a result of it being a mix of existing and brand-new roads, this route's road design is not constant and can vary between sections. At some section of Leafy Road is one lane per direction, but for the vast majority of its course it takes the from of a dual-carriageway road, with some parts built to expressway standards, with two lanes per carriageway.

Although the route consists of a lot of inclined roads, but only a section of Leafy Road near the Leafy Hospital bus stop has a gradient of 1:10. Since there are only two lanes per carriageway and several sloped roads, all drivers are required to keep the vehicle on left lane except overtaking while bus drivers are highly recommended to stay at the left lane throughout the route.

Bus Routes Using This Route[]

Currently, no bus routes operate on the entire length of this highway in one trip. Route 475 and 475A are the closest to running the full highway in one trip, however, it does not operate on Strategic Route 4 between the Horizon Bridge and Zone 7 Interchange.

Unless otherwise specified, all bus routes that travel via Senpai Bypass only consist of between Zone 7 Interchange and Leafy Road section or the trumpet interchange with YiYan.

Some bus routes only travel between the Hill Road Flyover and Zone 7 Interchange, however, for the purposes of this article, they do not exactly count as using Strategic Route 4.

Trivia[]

  • This road is the highest expressway in the Islands, with the viaduct over East Door at 170 m above sea level.
  • Although the highway passes over East Door, traffic heading to East Door must exit at Leafy Road as there are no exits in East Door proper.
  • The ramps to/from the Haisey Roundabout ascend a steep hill, making them some of the longest slip roads in the Islands.
