North Island Road is a main road that runs between North Island Estate and Northern Beach, via Norton, Downhill and North Island Estate. This main road tackles some of the mountainous areas and coastal areas of the island where it is two lanes majority. At North Island Estate near North Island Estate Shopping Centre and Norton, the road becomes four lanes. The road also is the only road in Norton Island intersects to the bridge towards University Island and Moon Island.

Overview[]

North Island Road map

The section of North Island Road is marked with orange lines

Being the original main road in North Island and the main road to the higher elevations from Moon Island, the areas in the mountains are quite steep and may be difficult to navigate.

Prior to June 20, 2020, North Island Road was the only way to travel between Moon Island and most points in North Island, prior the addition of the coastal road through Norton, known as Norton Road.

The road is based off mountainous roads that exist in many of Hong Kong's districts, which ascend steep hills to serve smaller communities in the mountains. With many switchbacks after leaving the coastal areas, it allows vehicles to travel between the coast and the high elevations of North Island.

On 1 June 2024, the road receives revamp and scenery upgrade, with more intersection at Downhill near Panorama Heights. A new roundabout is built at the Southern end near Rocky Road bus terminus.

Usage[]

Prior to Norton Road being constructed, North Island Road saw heavy traffic as it would be the main way for commuters in North Island to get towards Central, as it was the faster route to get to North Island Estate compared to travelling via University Island on the Moon Island Bypass. Traffic levels have been reduced since the opening of the coastal road serving Norton (which is practically an extension of North Island Road), alongside Rocky Road also extending into Norton which allows traffic from Northern Beach to avoid the mountains. Consequently, no major road layout changes in the mountains were made until the opening of the North Island Education Village, as well as new developments in Downhill near Panorama Heights.
