Zone 4 route 42 is operated by FT Central Connect, travelling between Southern Central and Rocky Road.
This route is similar to 47 since both routes serve Central, Central Hospital, Sunshine Station and North Island Estate. The variation is that this route runs via Southern Central and Northern Interchange, while 47 travels via Eastmallow and Sunshine University.
This route is one of only 2 lines that wasn't extended to Norton Shopping Centre in the Norton Update (the other being 49A, which serves the mountainous terrain north of Norton).
In V2 update, a new branch of route 42, known as 42A created to serve Sunshine Pier. This route was classified as Central Axis. Player finishes this route along with 25, 41A and 74A (in both directions) can get Central Axis achievement.
History[]
- On 3 November 2017, 42 started its service, travelling between Sunshine Station and North Island Estate. This route and 49A are the first two bus routes in Sunshine Islands.
- (Date TBC, before 12/2018), extended to Southern Central.
- On 21 December 2018, route change occurred near Central Bus Lane Stop.
- On 31 January 2019, Sunshine Road rebuilt bridge is opened, eastbound trips now travel via that bridge.
- On 26 May 2019, the route takes the new Bird Bridge.
- On 10 June 2019, the route uses the new bridge between Red Wall Road and Northern Interchange
- On 4 August 2019, Sunshine Road near Central Hospital is rebuilt, stop location relocated.
- On 12 November 2019, routing modified, this route now stops at Johnson Market instead of Johnson Garden for both directions.
- On 9 December 2019, this route now travels via Southern Terrance additionally for both directions. Central Bus Lane stop renamed to Southern Garden Two (Southbound, towards North Island Estate) and Southern Market (Northbound, towards Southern Central). The Southern Garden Two Bus Stop towards North Island is relocated, while the Southern Two stop towards Southern Central is cancelled.
- On 10 December 2019, the Uphill Slope bus stop is cancelled for both directions, Downhill Estate Bus Terminus is rebuilt, bus stop there relocated.
- On 13 December 2019, North Island Garden South Tower Stop (toward Southern Central) renamed as North Island Estate Shopping Centre, stop location also changed
- On 20 June 2020, this route now travels via Norton instead of travelling via Downhill Estate for both directions. The route at North Island Estate was also altered.
- On 13 January 2022, Sunshine Square was removed.
- On 12 January 2024, a new branch of this route was announced as route 42A as destination exposures are needed for KMB and NWFB Enviro500s. This will be introduced sometime in the future to serve Sunshine Pier.
- On 1 June 2024, route 42A entered service. The route no longer operates circular, and the terminus moved to Rocky Road. Sunshine Island Bus took over Sunshine Express to operate the route as well as the routing was modified.
- For both directions, the route added stops at Southern Cultural District, Sunshine Pier and Panorama Heights.
- To Rocky Road, the route removed Government Office, Southern One, Southern Two and North Island Estate - Rocky Tower.
- On 28 June 2024, FT Central Connect took over Sunshine Island Bus to operate the route.

Special arrangements during typhoon[]
- This route will still provide special service (named as Route Y42) when typhoon signal 8 or above is hoisted and when conditions permit. However, buses will only run within Central Town Center in circular mode, and omitting Southern Central, Sunshine Station, Central Hospital, Northern Interchange, Downhill Estate and North Island Estate.

- Bus service will be suspended when weather conditions threaten the safety of the buses, or the roads are blocked.
Usage Status[]
This route is one of the earliest routes operated in Sunshine Islands, with the route staying loyal to its roots of running along the inner streets of Moon Island. This, however, has led to the route to meander along Zone 4, especially towards the Southern direction due to road alignments. As a result, the usage status is far lower than other local routes between North Island and Moon Island. Despite this however, the route does serve as the only route that goes between North Island and Middle Road, as well as going via Norton Swimming Pool, often leading to a surge in demand during after-school hours.
Trivia[]
- Though route 42 has been extended from Sunshine Station to Southern Central, but up till 24 January 2020, Sunshine Express hadn't updated the buses' route display signs, therefore the destination of this route shown on the route display was Sunshine Station instead of Southern Central.
- Before V2.0 update, counting both directions for circular routes as one journey, route 42 has more stops than 171P for one journey, with a total of 36 stops.
- There is a bug of passenger will never enter on Route 42 towards Southern from Red Wall Road to Bird Bridge. It is unknown why passengers are still located there. It was fixed in V2.0 update.
