Inter-zone route 171 is a bus route in SI, which is served by Forever Transit and City Scape Bus, travelling between Long Island Ferry Pier and Rainbow Estate Complex , via Central and Alexander.

This route had the most stops in one direction on Sunshine Islands, with a total of 33 (to Long Island), with the title inherited from route 475 and route 42 (If all stops on circular routes are counted). Currently, this route only has a total stop of 28 (to Long Island), while the most stops route is the overnight version N171.

History[]

  • On 24 January 2020, route 171P started service.
  • From 25/1 to 26/1/2020, service from 6:30 fix to 0:30, every 20 mins.
  • On 21 March 2020, Twitter Office stop added and Timelapse Mall stop relocated
  • On 25 July 2020, Senpai Bypass is opened. The route now travels via Senpai Bypass instead of travel via Hill Road Flyover for both directions, also the route now stops at Leafy University Dorm additionally for both directions.
  • On 13 January 2022, East Door Lower Estate to Rainbow Estate bus stop were removed.
  • On 1 June 2024, the route number has been changed to 171 and upgraded to full-day daily service. Add a special departure from Southern Central to Rainbow. For both directions, Leafy University Dorm, Leafy University North, Alexander Shopping Centre and Alexander Road removed. For direction to Rainbow, Southern One removed while N Park and East Long Island Hospital added. For direction to Long Island, Sunshine Stadium removed.

Special arrangement during Marathon[]

When the Sunshine Islands Marathon is being held, this route will be shortened to operate between Zone 4 and Zone 7 only, with the temporary terminus in Zone 4 located at Norton Town Center, the westbound direction is also rerouted via Central Road and Northern Plaza. This diversion is its own route, numbered as route 471.

All bus stops in Zone 1 and Western Harbour Tunnel Interchange will be skipped during diversion. Passengers travelling to and from Zone 1 are advised to use other alternative bus routes for transfer, or consider taking Sunshine Islands Metro instead.

After the bus departs Southern Central Road, an automated announcement will be played informing passengers about the diversion.

Usage Status[]

This route was initially designed for rush-hour traffic of commuters. Although most of the stops along this route are in either Zone 1 or Zone 7, passengers travelling to Zone 4 can also take this route instead of Bus route 140 or Bus route 473 using Northern Interchange. Using this route, and with interchanging, passengers can access almost any point in Sunshine Islands and therefore has extremely high demand. As a result, due to high demand on Sundays and holidays for cross-Islands travel, service was expanded to run all day with the "P" designation removed.

After Route 171 was upgraded to become a full-day service, the route became one of the busiest routes across the entirety of Sunshine Islands, as the route is the only inter-zone route for Alexander, with many commuters boarding this route to interchange for Zone 4 at Zone 7 Interchange. Furthermore, its two-way section fare attracted many local commuters from East Door and Mo to West Leafy Island. As a result, Route 171 is often full during peak hours before even leaving Zone 1, leaving many passengers unable to board in Zone 4 or Zone 7 Interchange.
